Kirk
and Joni Bovill established Elmo Records
as a Christian indie label in December of
1999. Their two releases, "Love So
Real" and “Are You Ready” received
critical acclaim and nationwide airplay.
As a result, Kirk and Joni have performed
throughout the country in large and small
venues.
Kirk'
s songs could be heard in two episodes of
the “Believers Among Us” series on TBN in
the fall of 2005.
"We
wanted to have the artistic freedom to break
out of the predictable mode of the Nashville
style of Christian music", said Kirk,
"As indie artists, we are not forced
into a single musical direction, which allows
me as a writer to fuse rock, funk, jazz
and black gospel. Something that we like
to call funkalicious rock-n-soul. We play
music that folks outside and inside of the
church can relate and groove to. We don't
want to be preachin' to the choir!"
Elmo
Records is named in loving memory of Joni's
father, Elmo Green. He was a Mississippi
sharecropper and served as a church deacon.
The Elmo Records logo represents Joni and
her father walking past a cotton field on
the way to their favorite fishing hole when
she was a little girl. It also represents
God's call for His people to be fishers
of men. Joni serves as the CEO of Elmo Records.
In
addition, KIR4J Publishing was established
as the publishing house for Kirk's catalog
of songs. In the past three years, Kirk
has written or co-written 24 songs that
have been recorded. Two of the songs co-written
with producer Randy Emata, "Faith,
Hope and Love" and "Hold On"
were selected as Gospel category finalists
in the USA Songwriting Contests in 2001
and 2002, respectively. Kirk's song “Worship
You” was a USA Songwriting Contest finalist
in 2004.
